The Internet offers almost anyone the chance to start an exciting business from home. If you do things right your new enterprise can be very profitable. But if you make some common mistakes you won't end up making much money.

One of the biggest decisions is whether to promote products through a website you build or without a website. The Internet allows you to get an affiliate marketing business off the ground either way. Which means having your own website is not necessary to start making money online.

On the other hand, having your own website is sometimes a good idea. And if you choose to go this route you might want to consider buying special website-building software. Unlike hiring a computer "geek" - which can cost up to $100 an hour - most site-building software runs for two or three hundred dollars. And you only pay once. The best type of software is what's called WYSIWYG.

That stands for "What You See Is What You Get." As you type the contents of your website the software automatically creates the HTML code. You don't need to know anything about programming.

Again, keep in mind, having your own website is not necessary to get an online business going. Because the fastest way to get started is by driving web surfers directly to your affiliate link using articles. This is probably the easiest online business model.

Here are the steps:

1. Become a member on one of the popular affiliate networks. It's usually free to join.

2. Look over the popular product categories. Choose several products to affiliate with. Products that reveal valuable information - like ebooks, MP3 audios, etc. - are especially popular.

3. Join both GoArticles.com and EzineArticles.com. These are article directories. You'll promote your affiliate link by writing and distributing online articles through these directories. Each article will contain your affiliate link in the resource box. People clicking that link will go to the website featuring the affiliate product. Should they purchase the product you get paid a commission.

4. Before writing your articles research at least 10 keywords to feature in each article. Use the Google Keyword Tool online for this research. You're looking for keywords that have a monthly search volume of 1,000 searches or so. Also open up another browser window and type each keyword with quotes in the Google search box. You want to write articles around keywords featured on no more than 25,000 other web pages.

5. Finally, write an article for each keyword of 300 to 500 words. Distribute those articles and repeat. In no time, your articles will get exposure all over cyberspace. People will click on your affiliate links and some will buy the product you're an affiliate of. And you'll quickly start making money online from home.

The business model I just described is easy to implement. It is low risk and high reward. You don't need money to get started. You don't need a website. You don't need a product of your own.

You just need to find the hot markets in the affiliate networks you join. Write relevant articles and distribute them with your affiliate link. Then repeat.
